It’s Not Easy Being a Lemon

Say, for instance, you’re finally able to buy that sports car you’ve always wanted. You’ve toiled and saved and sacrificed for years to get it. Would you be satisfied if it turned out to be a lemon? If it ran for only a couple hours before breaking down, every time you drove it?

We spend the better part of our lives engaged in a concerted effort to acquire possessions.

Boats, trucks, motorcycles, cars, jet skis, tools, you name it, we want it. Then, every Sunday, we attend an assembly of the Church and are reminded that none of those things really matter. Isaiah 55:1-2  Monday comes, and it’s back to the frenzied game of acquisition.

But no matter how badly we want something, it doesn’t come close to God’s intense desire for us to love Him, and love one another. We often think that giving God what He wants, simply means “going to church”, and giving our attention to God for a couple of hours. And, after we’ve fulfilled our duty, we are free to return to the grind and ignore Him for another six days.

The truth is, we are His possession, bought and paid for. We constantly have His attention. God’s desire for His creation to love Him, and for us to love one another, goes far beyond any desire we will ever experience. One need only look to the cross to see this.

But we work hard to get what we want, right?  Overtime, second jobs, scrimping, saving, financing, interest, second mortgages, servitude to employers, subjection to bankers and becoming indentured servants to credit card companies.

In contrast, is it really so difficult to give God what he wants? What Jesus died for? Love and Obedience? 2 John 1:6
