Carry your cell phone, Carry your sword….and super-size it.

These days, being without a cell phone can present a serious- perhaps even dangerous- lack of communication. So we carry them everywhere. Mine rang during Church service on three separate occasions -very embarrassing. Most of the Church is familiar with my ring tone, leaving no doubt as to the person responsible. Oddly, by sight or by sound, our cell phones are readily recognized by those we associate with. I wonder who, among family and friends, would recognize our bibles?

Of course, we must carry our cell phones to communicate. They keep us in touch with our loved ones, they’re essential when things go wrong, and they help us keep track of our kids.  But, Jesus, God, The Holy Spirit, they are among our loved ones, aren’t they?  The Word of God is essential when things go wrong…right? And the Bible can certainly help us keep track of where our kids are going. Doesn’t God communicate with us through His Word? (Romans 10:17 NIV) So, why don’t we carry our bibles?

Perhaps you are one of those individuals who have chapter and verse sufficiently memorized. You don’t need to carry it. Except, most folks who fit that description carry a Bible (or two) everywhere they go.

Perhaps lugging your bible around is just impractical. We only need it on Sunday right? Besides, someone might think you’re one of those crazy evangelists. Someone might learn that being a Christian is not just a one-day-a-week thing. Religion is private.

The kid taking money at the drive-through window might look down into your “nice ride” and see something that gives them the inspiration to resist temptations in their life..…. Or, they could see a cell phone, and be reminded to call their friends and find out where the next party will be… Think about it next time you get lousy service at the drive-through…..

Carry your cell phone. Carry your Sword. Ephesians 6:17 (NIV)
