It’s Better… You’ll see it often in Del Rio… a popular bumper sticker slogan that finds it’s way to caps, shirts, and other gear. “The worst day fishin’ is still better than the best day at work!” Why is it so popular? Simple. We agree with it. Most people would far sooner be doing something they LOVE with a little bad weather than something mundane or boring even in good conditions. I’ve got a wonderful laptop to do articles and research on, it’s one of the best out there… but I’d MUCH rather be playing even a broken-down game with one of my sons. You see the point? I’d rather live in a shack with the woman I love than live in a mansion with anyone else. David understood this life-truth as well as we do, but when he reflected on it and wrote about it in the Psalms, he took it to the next level… the more appropriate level… he ascribed it to God in heaven. “Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.” (Psalm 84:10) David realized, like we need to, that one day in the service of the King has more value than a thousand doing anything else, even the things we love. He understood that anyone in God’s household has it infinitely better than any other creature. Father, help us to see how the pursuits, hobbies, and goals of this life are of no value if they do not include You. Help us to share David’s perspective and live it out in real life. Above all things, we desire to know You and find a home in Your house forever…
